The original real Luger P08 was peculiar in many ways. Unlike the American Colt .45 "down in the mud trench gun", the Luger P08 required exacting machining and fitting operations necessary to hold close tolerances demanded by the design. It featured a break open knuckle/toggle bolt which was odd from an engineering standpoint (not to mention the weird inertial dynamics), was muzzle light, had a notoriously spongy-creepy trigger pull, and could be fired (one round) with the barrel /bolt assembly disconnected from the frame. Many had their take down lever buttons sheared off by owners who were unaware of the correct take down procedure. It was a pistol well suited as an officer's sidearm (much like the Japanese Nambu), and was widely issued in just that role. The more practical Walther P-38 was also issued, but never generated the mystique of the Luger. To this day, the legendary Luger P08 endures as one of the most recognizable and classic pistol designs of all time. Originals in fine condition with matching serial numbers continue to command ever higher prices, especially ones connected with an interesting 'history'.
